DSSC-NSTP initiates Orientation in a New Normal Way

To raise the level of awareness among the freshmen students enrolled in the National Service Training Program (NSTP) amid the pandemic, the Davao del Sur State College launched an on-air NSTP Orientation over DXDS Radio Ukay Station.

In a live airing during the Reservist Hour Program of 1101st Community Defense Center (CDC) on August 22, 2020, DSSC-NSTP together with 1101st CDC Director Major Anwar Ray O. Celis, Sgt. Jorge D. Bayhon, DSSC Vice President of Academic Affair, Dr. Augie E. Fuentes, and the NSTP Director Mrs. Cherry B. Corpin introduced NSTP as a subject that aims to enhance the youth’s civic consciousness and defense preparedness by developing ethics of service and patriotism. The school offers two out of the three components of NSTP namely Reserve-Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC) and Civic Welfare Training Service (CWTS) of which the freshmen must decide which to choose.

According to Dr. Fuentes, students who completed the non-ROTC course will become members of the National Service Reserve Corps of which they may be tapped by the State for literacy and civic welfare activities especially in times of calamities. Moreover, according to Major Celis, students who are graduates of basic ROTC will be prioritized if they wish to join the regular force in the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) and other uniformed units.

Graduates can also be able to undergo training in Officer Candidate Corps and acquire Basic Military Science Degree. He added that students who opted to join the Advance ROTC, are qualified to undergo three months training for the Probationary Officer Training Corps (POTC) once they graduate.

During the orientation, the students were allowed to raise their questions through texting the cellular phone number provided or asking their subject teachers in their respective group chats to be forwarded to the DSSC-NSTP group chat. The on-air orientation showed the school’s initiative to come up with solutions and ways to continue the NSTP amid pandemics.

As recorded by the Office of the Registrar, the total number of freshmen students enrolled this year raised to 1, 908. Considering the huge number of enrollees and prohibited conduct of face-to-face enrolment and classes, the registration for the ROTC was done online through the use of google form. Freshmen who did not fill-up the form are automatically enrolled in CWTS. DSSC-NSTP during the live airing informed the students that all classes in this subject will be done through Virtual, Online or Modular process.

Unleashing the Power of the Youth: NSTP DS CCTS Online Registration

It has been woven into the tapestry of the three Greek Fates that the global glamour and glitz will be annihilated by the penumbra of a blisteringly vicious virus, the COVID-19. Upon the supremacy of the waves of darkness, immense beauty of light came to the surface of the vast land of humanity as the youth of today's generation unleash their power to accommodate the needs of the community.

In the light of the global pandemic, the DSSC NSTP-enrolled students actively exercise their civic participation through assisting and helping the citizens of their community in the Davao del Sur COVID-19 Contact Tracing System or DS CCTS Online Registration. With the theme "Youth Can Help: Responsive to the Needs the Community Face", the NSTP-organized activity was able to generate a massive number of DS CCTS registrants as students helped a total of 4, 336 residents of the Province of Davao del Sur.

The DSSC NSTP Coordinator, Madam Cherry B. Corpin, together with the NSTP instructors, gracefully encouraged the students to take part and exercise the power of their roles in supporting the province's efforts against the growing concern on the increasing COVID-19 positive cases. Moreover, the students were also encouraged to assist and educate others as their share of help to the community. Including the students, the total CCTS registrants and card acquisition reached at 5, 640 collectively.

National Service Training Program or NSTP aims to promote civic consciousness among the youth and inculcate in them the spirit of nationalism and advance their involvement in public and civic affairs. In DSSC, the components ROTC or Reserved Officers' Training Corps, which was designed to provide military training to tertiary level students, and CWTS or Civic Welfare Training Service that is composed of programs and activities contributing to the general welfare of the community, were implemented.

The said NSTP activity is in accordance with the Provincial Ordinance 20-60, an Ordinance Implementing the Davao del Sur COVID-19 Contact Tracing System. Further, the DS CCTS is highly crucial in these times as it helps provide a fast and efficient way of gathering pieces of information relevant to determining COVID-19 signals of asymptomatic and symptomatic individuals entering the premise of various institutions within the province.

The province might have been challenged by the effects of COVID-19 pandemic, but the DSSC freshmen students enrolled in NSTP are on the move in unleashing their powers to support the province's goal to flatten the curve.
